At the UT Lab School, we strive to provide a nutritious snack for children and adults every day. Snack is served, family style, to preschoolers and toddlers mid-way through the child’s day in the program. Nutritious means low-sugar, low-salt, low- fat, low-preservatives, whole grain, and fresh. We do not use artificial sweeteners. Snack is meant to be a light snack and not a substitute for a nutritious breakfast or lunch. But we serve enough food for children to have second servings of vegetables, fruits, and/or grains as desired.
Snacks are planned using guidelines provided by the United States Department of Agriculture. In addition, our snack menu is prepared in collaboration with a registered dietician/nutritionist. It is posted each semester on classroom bulletin boards and emailed to families. Teachers occasionally plan a special cooking activity (e.g., smoothies, vegetable soup, and individual pizzas). Food that has been prepared by the children is typically served in addition to snack. Information about these cooking
activities will be emailed to families in advance. Revisions to the snack menu, will be posted on the bulletin board for each classroom and emailed to families too.
Lunch
Children attending our Kinder class are not served snack. Instead, they bring their own lunch from home each day. Separate guidelines for lunch are distributed to parents of children in the Pecan class at the beginning of each school year.
